Sure why not. Just keep an eye on where you plan to sell it.

Sadly, NO BODY (this means = read gold & silver stores, Ebayers, the sheeple) will automatically recognize them.

When you can BUY Kruggerands for $835?

You take the chance - but why go cheap?

I agree with HS. Pass on the one off Olympic type stuff and get a highly recognizable Krug.

I agree with both of you.......

For monetary investment, I agree. Some of the Olympic stuff is nice enough though to buy on it's own merit. This example is a French 1996 Olympic Commemorative. If you are buying for a collection, get the neat stuff but if you are buying for pure investment purposes, Krugs forever.

If strictly for the bullion play, go for the cheapest, If you believe you will need it for monetary useage ( I dont think that will happen) go for maples. krugs and eagles, francs ect.

Are Austrian Phils totally passe? I never hear any mention of them around here.

MUCH less common, harder to find, less recognized.

I like them, tho. I've been looking to pick one up for a while now.

One of my most favorite of the bullion coins - I grabbed a couple some time back - if another rolls my way (and it could) I'll let you know - trade ya if you want!

Their beauty is hard to match --

I know an old guy that has run his gold shop since 1956 and I got some from him.

You have the best pictures - as I told you a dozen times - but you are also the first one to point out the topless women on the coin!!! :D

Thanks for the info ... I've seen them online for reasonable premiums, but I haven't come across them recently at a show or anything (I shoulda bought one when I used to live near CNI). I'm also too gun-shy to buy gold at these prices. On the next pullback, I'll probably pick one up.

I bought a few American Arts rounds...

Only some, not all, are marked as gold. When I went to my dealer to trade gold for silver, he gave me the same value as the gold bar I turned in so if I can get them for a good price, I will buy again. Warning though, these DO NOT TEND to bring full price on E-Bay http://www.goldcoinsdealer.com/newin...ican_arts_gold And http://cgi.ebay.com/AMERICAN-ART-1-O...QQcmdZViewItem

Re: Anyone see a problem buying Clearance gold rounds??

I think the US mint medals are just fine. There is a whole series...Grant Wood, Mark Twain, etc. I think, not sure, but the ones before 1986 were not marked at all gold....you just have to know. I think they are a great deal, and personally I like the gold copper alloy. Medallion should weigh 1.1 troy oz..
Any dealer thats been around will recognize them right away...but for a SHTF scenario, it's not marked. I like them.
Saw some real nice Mexican commemoratives, too. Large nice medallion 22K I think...but also not marked.

latemetal 11-12-2007 02:33 PM

1980 and 1981 American Arts are not marked...

1982 and later are marked 1/2 and 1 ounce gold, these coins are .900 fine. :bull-buddy-icon:When I can get a large discount to spot, I buy them, sell them to my dealer and buy marked .999 silver.

Re: Anyone see a problem buying Clearance gold rounds??

It's the same with Commemoratives. I picked up two 1987 Constitution sets (2 piece sets with Silver Dollar and 1/4 oz. $5 gold) and a 3 piece 1986 Liberty Commemorative set (Silver Dollar, Half Dollar, and 1/4 oz. $5 gold) for a total of $619 shipped, over the weekend. Pretty sweet deal in terms of gold and silver content purchased, but if I were to turn around and sell them to a dealer, I MIGHT break even. But I'll be hanging on to them for awhile.

latemetal 11-14-2007 05:47 PM

Lake Placid Gold

Bought a Lake Placid set on E-Bay for $720 s/h/i and traded it to a dealer for 50.5 ounces of silver, mostly Prospectors, onza's, J+M bars, and some painted or scratch and dent SAEs. This works out at $14.26/oz when kitco silver $14.98. I will buy odd-ball gold if I can get it cheap enough.:bull-buddy-icon:

Buying now would be a great time as gold is under $795! Looks like we are in for a decent pullback, so buyers will be favored!
